2nd X1 v Newtown 20th June 2009 Report by - Lee Standell
On what looked a very dubious day the men from Madeley made the long trip down to Newtown with a strong squad and looking to add another 20 points to what has been an excellent campaign so far, Depending on the weather!
Ever present skipper Sam Norman won the toss and opted to bat. Sam Hathaway (Chuckle) And Lee Standell opened the innings but runs were hard to come by with conditions perfect for swing bowling. Newtown used this to their advantage keeping very tight lines and restricting Madeley to only 30 - 0 from 20 overs. L.Standell finally decided to move things on and missed one striaght away. On the same score S.Hathaway also tried to push on and lifted one straight up to mid-on, but wickets were in hand. Andrew Laycock (Verbal) was now at the crease and accelerated into 20-20 mode scoring a quickfire 29 from 26 balls before falling. Wickets then fell regularly with players getting their eye in but then getting out to silly shots (the story against Shelton). Mr Chairman (L.Woodhall) wagged with the tail top scoring with 31, showing everyone else how to bat. Madeley ended on 151 from 49.3 overs with M.Ogglethorpe taking 6-42 and R.Davies 2-44.
After an excellent tea Newtown's innings began to what couldn't have been a better start, racing to 53-0. h L.Bowen and Harry (prep) Thomas bowled well but unsucessfully. This sparked a bowling change in which Jason Willets (turkish delight) and L.Woodhall would put Madeley in charge of the game. First Willets took Ogglethorpe for 37 and possibly had the big hitter N.Davies (16) twice before Willets finally got what he deserved. This sparked Loll into a flurry of wickets for not many runs at all, but Madeley were frustrated after getting Newtown to 103-7. S.Powar hung in surprisingly with 16 from 72 balls and Newtown held on for a losing draw finishing on 116-8 from 50 overs (Must mention the tail ender reverse sweeping S.Norman on the final ball). L.Woodhall ended with 5-17 from 11 overs and J.Willets 2-30 from 10 overs.
Madeley 8 points Newtown 4 points.
Man Of Match : L.Woodhall (bat and ball)
